Rail hit by sabotage

An Express train went off tracks in Rajshahi on Sunday after fishplates were removed.

The sabotage disrupted train services on Rajshahai-Dhaka and Rajshahi-Khulna routes.

Rajshahi Railway Police OC Alamgir Hossain said blockade campaigners removed fishplates of railway track between Sarda and Nandangachhi railway stations in Chaarghat Upazila.

The engine and five coaches of the Dhaka-bound 'Dhumketu Express' got derailed around 1.30am just past midnight, said Rezaul Karim, manager of Rajshahi railway station.

No one was injured, but the accident forced trains on the Rajshahi-Dhaka and Rajshahi-Khulna routes to stop.

Karim said it may take until Sunday afternoon to resume train services on these routes.

The Railways official said 'Dhumketu Express' was delayed for two hours from Rajshahi as opposition supporters blocked the tracks in the University Rail Station area with tree-logs at midnight.

Rajshahi bound 'Padma Express' remained grounded at Nandangachhi rail station.

Authorities shifted passengers to another train beyond the accident spot to send them to Rajshahi.

Sabotage at Chandpur

Chittagong bound 'Meghna Express' had to be stopped due to track sabotage at Nauri of Shahrasti Upazila.

Chandpur railway station's master Maruf Hossain said blockade supporters removed fishplates around 6.30am on Sunday disrupting the link between Chandpur and Laksham.

He said train service would only resume after repairs are completed.
