3 burnt in vessel fire

The cabin of ‘OT Kingfisher-1’, used for transporting oil, caught fire near the Jamuna Oil jetty at around 9am on Tuesday, EPZ Police Station OC Abul Mansur said.

Agrabad Fire Service Station official Jasim Uddin suspects the fire first broke out in the kitchen.

Chittagong port's Deputy-Preserver Capt Najmul Alam said the oil on the vessel did not cause the fire.

He said the oil cargo was unaffected.

The injured have been identified as Kamal Uddin, 32, from Barisal, Md Azmir, 35, from Noakhali, and Md Emon, 32, from Comilla.

Azmir is the vessel's engine operator.

The injured men have been admitted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

CMCH doctor Mrinal Kanti Das said Kamal had suffered over 90 percent burns, Azmir 80 percent, and Emon 54 percent.

Their windpipes have been damaged, according to the doctor.

The port's tugboat employees and firefighters doused the flames, said Capt Alam.
