Chittagong trains resume

Trains resumed around 11.15am, Chittagong Railway Station Manager Shamsul Alam said.

Dhaka-bound Chattala express and Sylhet-bound Paharika Express, stranded at Pahartali Station, left for their destinations, he said.

BNP activists set fire to rail tracks near the AK Khan rail gate in the port city around 9.45am on Sunday, witnesses said.

They also exploded several handmade bombs at the time.

Bomb explosions were heard at the Alangkar intersection in the morning.

Police lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the blockade campaigners.

Meanwhile, BNP activists held a rally in front of the party’s Nasiman Bhaban office in the city.

BNP is enforcing a whole-day strike in Chittagong district to protest arrests of six leaders including the party chief’s Advisor Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin, Organising Secretary Golam Akbar Khandaker and his personal assistant Arjun Kumar Nath.

It is also enforcing a 72-hour countrywide blockade from 6am on Saturday in protest against announcement of polls schedule and arrests of leaders and activists.
