Public transport crisis ahead of march

Buses have stopped plying on various routes in the capital since morning.

Though on some routes, they are plying but in ever-lesser numbers.

Mahmudur Rahman says he has been waiting very long for a bus at Mohammadpur bus stand to go to Mirpur.

His anger is directed at politicians who he feels are responsible.

"What kind of politics it is that do not bring any welfare to people."

Large number of people were seen waiting for buses at Shahbagh, Bangla Motor, Maghbazar, Mohammadpur, Asadgate, Mohakhali and many such places for going to office.

Many of them started for office on foot or by rickshaw as they could not find any bus.

Rickshaws were seen running along main roads in the capital.

Talking to bdnews24.com, Bikalpa Paribahan's manager Md Rubel Mia said no car would come out on the streets because of security concerns on Saturday and Sunday.

Long-haul buses have also been grounded at Mohakhali and Sayedabad buses terminals.

Preferring not to be named, a Desh Bangla Paribahan owner said, "Their buses run along Lakkhipur and Feni routes, but they cannot do it now."

A Ekushey Paribahan worker said their buses were also not running.

Dhaka-Bandura route's Druto Paribahan manager Md Rubel Mia said they had stopped plying buses along the roads for the sake of security.

Rubel said at least 80 buses, including thirty of theirs, have gone off the roads.

Buses were not running along the Dhaka-Mawa route, he added.

bdnews24.com correspondent Anish Mishkat said from Mohakhali that long route buses were not leaving from there on Saturday.
