Fire at New Market

A godown was gutted as a fire broke out at New Super Market early Saturday.
The fire originated from electric short circuit at around 1:45am. On information, two fire fighting units of Polashi fire service rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after half an hour effort. Some other shops damaged a little in the fire, said fire men. Polashi fire service senior station officer Mofazzal Hossain confirmed the matter to banglanews.

2 killed in road crashes in dists

Two people were killed in separate road accidents in two districts on Friday morning.
The deceased were identified Sujarul Islam, 22, of Natore and Nasir Uddin, 28, of Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj. Our Natore correspondent reports: A private car plunged into a roadside pond as its driver lost control over the steering Danyir para on Abdulpur-Salampur regional highway at around 6:00am, leaving the driver dead on the spot. Lalpur thana officer-in-charge Motiar Rahman said that on information, police force was sent to the spot. Banglanews Chapainawabganj correspondent reports: A human hauler (Nosimon) collided head-on with a power tiller tractor in Vitabari area under Gomostapur upazila at around 8:30am, leaving the driver of human hauler dead on the spot. Confirming the matter, Gomostapur thana officer-in-charge Firoz Ahmed told banglanews that the tractor was seized and the body was taken to thana.

Road crash kills RU student

A student of Rajshahi University was killed in a road accident in front of the main gate of the varsity on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Sabrina Jahan, 20, a student of Social Welfare department of Rajshahi University. Witnesses said that an auto rickshaw ran over the victim when she along with her friend Sumi fell on the road after breaking axel of rickshaw carrying them at around 10:00am, leaving her dead on the spot. Locals rushed them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. RU proctor professor Dr. Toriqul Hasan said the body would be handed over family members after taken to the campus. Motihar Thana Officer-in-Charge Abdul Mazid confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Dhk-Ctg-Sylhet rail link restored

The rail communications on Dhaka-Chittagong-Sylhet routes have been restored after a 15-hour halt due to removal of fishplates of rail track by blockade supporters.
The rail services resumed around 12:40am and then Chittagong-bound Subarna Express departed from Kamlapur railway station. The other trains stranded at the station will leave for their destinations soon, said Station Master Motaleb Hossain. Akhaura Railway Thana Officer-in-Charge Saidul Islam told banglanews, “Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police men were deployed in the area.” Earlier on Tuesday morning, the train services on Chittagong-Sylhet-Dhaka routed halted as miscreants uprooted the rail slipper and set on fire to some compartments of Chattala Express.

Train derails as track removed Dhk-Ctg-Sylhet rail service halted

Rail communications of Chittagong with Dhaka and Sylhet halted as two compartments including engine derailed in Ashoktola area of the district town early Thursday.
Local sources said two compartments of Sylhet-bound Udyan Express from Chittagong at around 1:30am as blockade supporters uprooted fishplates of rail tracks in Ashoktola area. Comilla railway station master Shafiqur Rahman told none was reportedly injured in the derailment. A relief train rushed to the spot from Akhaura.

SQ Chy’s lawyer Fakhrul sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Barrister AKM Fakhrul Islam, a lawyer of convicted war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, to jail for his alleged invol
vement in much-talked-about verdict leak incident. Metropolitan Magistrate Emdadul Haque passed the order on Tuesday when investigation officer of the case M Habil Hossain placed him before the court after remand. On Monday, the High Court stayed the remand order passed by lower court against Barrister AKM Fakhrul Islam. An HC bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam passed the order. On November 20, detective branch of police arrested Barrister Fakhrul from his for leaking of war crimes verdict against Salauddin Quader. Fakhrul was arrested from his Segunbagicha chamber in the city on November 20. The following day, another court sent him to jail after rejecting a bail plea. Fakhrul was charged under the Information and Communication Technology Act, 2006 on November 21. On October 1, International Crimes Tribunal-1 awarded death penalty to BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for his involvement in crimes against humanity during liberation war in 1971.

Houston`s BD community seeks funds

The growing immigrant Bangladeshi population of Houston has been trying for years to build a permanent community center but has been stalled by a lack of funds.
Now, the Bangladesh Association, Houston, is hoping to raise about $1 million in what board members hope will be a major step toward reaching their fundraising goal.The nonprofit is holding a multicultural gala on Friday at Crowne Plaza Galleria to attract support. The Bangladesh Association Center is a $2.5 million project being built on four acres purchased in 2001 at 13145 Renn Road in southwest Harris County. The completed center would have an auditorium, a lobby, a sports complex, classrooms, an office and a contemplation room to serve more than 15,000 Bangladeshis in the Houston area, as well as the broader community. Association`s chairman Shah Haleem said, "We`re hoping to reach more corporate donors.” He also said: "We hope that one of the foundations will come forward and say, `You know what, we`re going to help your organization because you try to help not only your community, but you try to help the local community at large.` " The association, established in 1978 by recent graduates of the Bangladesh Student Association at the University of Houston, is maintained by more than 100 volunteers and runs on donations, "charity and the love of people," added Haleem. Once completed, the center will be open to anyone as the association takes pride in being multicultural and secular. Besides free medical and employment assistance, the association serves as a liaison between the community and local, state and federal agencies. The organization also offers classes on Sundays that include sports, music and an interfaith class that focuses on values, ethics and teaches about different religions.
